When can you achieve financial independence and retire early?

The 4% rule is the standard. Lower = safer, higher = riskier.

What is FIRE?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a movement of people who save and invest aggressively—often 50%+ of their income—so they can retire decades before the traditional age of 65.

The core idea is simple: save enough money, invest it wisely, then live off the returns. The "4% rule" says if you withdraw 4% of your portfolio per year, your savings should last 30+ years.

FIRE Number = Annual Spending ÷ Withdrawal Rate. For example, if you need $40,000/year and use the 4% rule, your FIRE number is $1,000,000.

Types of FIRE

  • Lean FIRE — Retire with minimal spending ($30k-$40k/yr). Requires ~$750k-$1M.
  • Regular FIRE — Retire with moderate spending ($40k-$60k/yr). Requires ~$1M-$1.5M.
  • Fat FIRE — Retire with comfortable spending ($80k+/yr). Requires $2M+.
